The canvas has a firm lining, and the paint surface is relatively clean with a clear and even varnish. The dark canvas ground has become more visible in some parts. There is a fold mark along the upper margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small and scattered retouchings in the background, including along the aforementioned fold. There are also scattered pin-prick retouchings in the figures, most densely in the figure of Christ and in the shadows at the end of the Madonna's proper right sleeve. There is a more concentrated spot around the Madonna's proper right eye and a few in her dress, notably one in the centre of the blue drapery approx. 2 x 2cm. There is also retouching to a repaired, diagonal tear starting from the lower margin and going across her foot, approx. 6cm. long. The painting is in overall good condition.
